Best cheap eats in Wellington

Putting it bluntly being on a budget f***ing sucks, no one likes staying at home while people are out partying away or saying no to that group dinner because the restaurant breaks your budget just on one entree alone! So I have created a list of places that allow you to get out of the house and treat yourself without breaking the bank.

Fisherman’s plate

Don't let the decor fool you, it has some of the best tasting pho that Wellington has to offer. Look past the fish ‘n’ chips and just go straight for the Vietnamese menu and for as little as $13 dollars you can fill yourself up to the brim with some goddam delicious pho.

Stonegrill 2 for 1

If you're early enough on Monday and Tuesday nights you might just be lucky enough to nab yourself one of Southern Cross’s 2 for 1 stone grills. This is great way to top up your iron intake as there is only so much mince a girl can eat!

Just like a mini BBQ, you cook your choice of meat or veggie right in front of you on a 400 degree Celsius volcanic rock, and only at a steal of $37 Max for two depending on your meal choice.

If stonegrill is not your thing they also offer 2 steak meals for $35, and 2 Burgers for $30.

Need a place for a special occasion or just when you're feeling a bit fancy then 2 for 1 Chow Monday's is for you. You will get one hell of a meal for half the price. Their Asian fusion menu is designed for sharing, two dishes per person can provide the perfect feast, just make sure one is a curry or soup to be safe.

Another thing to note is keep an eyes peeled on their Twitter for date night Tuesday and other crazy giveaways.

Chef’s palette

Wellington knows a good deal when they see one, that is why there is always a queue for Chef’s palette but when you can get a lunch for as little as $5 do you blame them?! You choose from a range of different meats on salad, noodles or potatoes and add your favourite sauces and chillies. It's fresh and filling, whilst being cheap and tasty, you can’t really go wrong.

Night markets – Friday and Saturday

Noone likes to pay $5 extra on corkage so why not grab a quick feed at the night markets plus free live entertainment. You can find an array of foods for offer here, from paella, to Moroccan wraps and even a hangi, there is enough to suit any taste bud.

One of my personal favourites is Zaaffran – moroccan lamb tagine wrap for $12, or a panda strings from Sichuan spice you up on a cold evening for only $8.

Every Friday night – 116 Cuba Street
Every Saturday night – Lower Cuba Street

Capital market

Arguing over what cuisine to choose or where to go?! Here is your solution. With stalls cover almost every cuisine, from Sri Lankan to Filipino, Malaysian to Korean and everything inbetween, you won’t find it hard to please everyone. Plus the prices are great!

Get a Asian salad bowl from Miss Kangsta for as little as $12.50 or a Banh Mi – grilled pork baguette for $7.50 from Where’s Charlie or what about a vegetarian curry from as little as $8 from the Ceylon Hut. There is even pizzas form $7.90!
